Overview

Electricity calculations involve several quantities that look similar at first glance - current, charge, voltage, resistance, energy and power. Each has its own SI unit, and mixing them up is one of the fastest ways to lose marks in an exam.

This lesson lists the seven units the Edexcel specification requires for the Electricity section: ampere, coulomb, joule, ohm, second, volt and watt. You will learn what each one measures, how they connect through equations, and how to handle the metric prefixes that appear in real circuit problems.

An ammeter reads 350. Is that a lot? Without the unit you cannot tell - 350 amperes would melt a household wire, but 350 milliamps is the current through a small LED. Every number in physics needs the correct unit to carry meaning.
