Theme Two: Local, National, International And Global Areas Of Interest

Overview

Theme two is the biggest theme on the specification and it is also the one that produced the most measurable results when the papers were counted. On both Writing papers on file, Question 1 came from this theme. On both Reading papers, the final and largest text, worth 24 of the 60 marks, was travel writing. The Listening paper's last task was a travel podcast. If you had to pick one theme to be fluent in, this would be a defensible choice.

The theme runs outwards from the room you are sitting in to the planet: home, town, neighbourhood and region; then social issues; then global issues; then travel and tourism. This lesson takes the four topics in turn, builds the language each one needs, and then teaches the single most reliable technique on the Reading paper, the one that turns a mark tariff into an instruction about how many ideas to explain.

Objectives

  1. Theme two covers the following four topics with related sub-topics shown as bullet points, where applicable: Topic 1: Home, town, neighbourhood and region Topic 2: Social issues
  2. Charity/voluntary work
  3. Healthy/unhealthy living Topic 3: Global issues
  4. The environment
  5. Poverty Topic 4: Travel and tourism

Lesson Note

Theme two covers the following four topics, with related sub-topics shown as bullet points where applicable. The words where applicable are doing real work: two of the four topics have bullets under them and two have none, and that difference tells you how tightly each one is defined.
