Audience Appreciation

Overview

The same message can land or fall flat depending entirely on who is listening. A slide deck that thrills a room of teenagers might bore a board of directors; a website that delights a child might frustrate an older user who cannot read the tiny font. Knowing your audience, and respecting their needs, is the difference between an ICT solution that works and one that is ignored.

This lesson shows you how to analyse an audience and design for it. You will learn the characteristics that matter (age, experience, expectations, knowledge, income, interests and any disabilities), the research methods used to find them out, and how those findings shape a presentation or a website. The skill is examined directly, so you will practise justifying design choices in terms of the audience they serve.

Objectives

  1. Audience appreciation.
  2. Show a clear sense of audience and purpose Planning ICT solutions that are responsive to and respectful of the needs of an audience Analyse the needs of an audience when creating ICT solutions.

Lesson Note

Whenever you build an ICT solution, a presentation, a website, a game, a database front end, real people will use it. If it does not suit them, the work is wasted. Cambridge expects you to show a clear sense of audience and purpose, to analyse what an audience needs, and to plan solutions that are responsive to and respectful of those needs. Marks come from linking each design decision to a reason about the audience.
