Transformations Of Function Graphs

Overview

Once you know the graph of a function, you can predict the graph of a whole family of related functions without plotting a single new point. Adding a number to a function slides its graph up; adding a number inside the function slides it sideways. These transformations let you see relationships between graphs at a glance.

In this lesson you will identify and describe the effect on the graph of \(y = f(x)\) of the transformations \(y = f(x) + k\) and \(y = f(x + k)\). One shifts the graph vertically, the other horizontally, and recognizing which is which is the heart of the topic.

Objectives

  1. Identify and describe the effect on the graph of y = f(x) of the transformations y = f(x) + k and y = f(x + k).

Lesson Note

Transformations turn one known graph into many. Instead of building each graph from scratch, you learn a few shift rules and apply them instantly. This way of seeing graphs as moved versions of a parent function is used throughout graphing, trigonometry and beyond.
