Livestock Housing
Overview
A farm animal that is too cold, too hot, crowded or standing in its own waste does not grow well, does not breed well and falls sick more often. Good housing is not a luxury; it is one of the cheapest ways a farmer protects the health, comfort and productivity of a herd or flock. The right shed keeps animals dry and sheltered, lets fresh air flow through, drains away dirt, and makes daily feeding, watering and cleaning quick and safe.
In this lesson you will learn what makes housing suitable for livestock, from ventilation and drainage to space, light, feeding and watering, and how the choice of building materials depends on the animal, the climate and what is available locally. You will also study the special care that newborn and young stock need in their first weeks of life, when a small mistake can cost an animal.
