Stellar Evolution

Overview

Stars are not all the same colour, and the difference is not decoration. A star's colour is a direct reading of how hot its surface is, which makes the night sky a temperature map that anybody can learn to read.

This lesson covers how stars are classified by colour, what that colour tells you about surface temperature, and the life story of a star like our Sun: from a cloud of gas and dust to a stable main sequence star, then a red giant, and finally a white dwarf. Expect sequencing and explanation questions on this topic in your Edexcel papers.

Look carefully at the winter sky and the stars are not all white. Betelgeuse in Orion is distinctly orange-red, while Rigel in the same constellation is a cold-looking blue-white. Those two colours are telling you something precise about the surfaces of two objects that are hundreds of light-years away, and neither star has ever been visited.
