A fungus, Ustilago maydis (also known as Ustilago zeae).
(ii) Mode of transmission:
The disease is transmitted mainly by wind or air-borne spores which are deposited on maize leaves, ears, tassels or other parts of susceptible plants. Spores may also survive in infected crop residues and soil.
