Coffee cultivation requires tropical conditions with warm temperatures, high humidity, and moderate altitude, typically found between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn in the so-called "coffee belt." South Africa lies mostly south of the Tropic of Capricorn, and its climate is too temperate and dry in most areas for commercial coffee production.
