(a) What is a balanced diet for livestock? [2]

  1. A balanced diet contains all the nutrients that an animal needs for its life processes [1].
  2. These nutrients are present in the correct proportions and amounts to meet the specific requirements of the animal's age, weight and level of production [1].

(b) Two minerals, one vitamin, and their importance [4]

Minerals (any two, with reason):

  • Calcium - needed for the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth; also essential for milk production in dairy cows and eggshell formation in poultry [1+1].
  • Phosphorus - required for bone formation and energy metabolism within cells [1+1].
  • Iron - essential for the formation of haemoglobin in red blood cells, which transports oxygen around the body [1+1].
  • Sodium - needed for proper nerve function and maintaining fluid balance in the body [1+1].

Vitamin (any one):

  • Vitamin A - needed for healthy eyesight, skin integrity and normal growth [1].
  • Vitamin D - required for calcium absorption from the gut and proper bone development [1].
  • Vitamin E - important for reproductive function and healthy muscle tissue [1].

(c) Difference between maintenance and production rations [3]

Any three valid points:

  1. A maintenance ration provides just enough nutrients to keep the animal alive, healthy and in stable body condition [1].
  2. On a maintenance ration the animal neither gains nor loses weight - energy intake exactly matches the energy used for basic body functions [1].
  3. A production ration provides additional nutrients above and beyond maintenance requirements [1]. These extra nutrients are channelled into productive outputs such as milk synthesis, body weight gain, pregnancy support, egg laying or wool growth.
  4. A production ration is therefore higher in both protein and energy than a maintenance ration [1].

(d) Why the farmer placed a mineral lick in the feeding area [2]

Any two valid points:

  1. The mineral lick provides essential minerals and trace elements (such as sodium, calcium, zinc and copper) that may be lacking or insufficient in the normal feed ration [1].
  2. Animals can use the lick voluntarily whenever they need it, allowing them to self-regulate their mineral intake according to individual requirements [1].
  3. This helps prevent mineral deficiency diseases (such as grass staggers from magnesium deficiency or anaemia from iron deficiency) [1].
