(b) Four ways in which plantation agriculture is important

  • Foreign-exchange earnings: plantation crops such as cocoa, coffee, tea and rubber are exported and bring in foreign currency.
  • Employment: plantations provide large-scale jobs for many workers in growing, harvesting and processing.
  • Raw materials for industry: they supply factories (for example oil palm for oil and margarine, rubber for tyres), encouraging industrial growth.
  • Development of infrastructure and rural areas: roads, railways, health and housing facilities are provided, and the crops widen and diversify the economy.
