The situation whereby some mammals remain inactive throughout dry and hot seasons is known as aestivation. Aestivation is a survival mechanism that enables some animals to conserve energy and water during periods of extreme heat and drought. During aestivation, the animals become dormant and reduce their metabolic rate to a minimum, allowing them to survive without food and water for extended periods of time. This is different from dormancy, which is a state of reduced metabolic activity in response to low temperatures or other adverse environmental conditions.
