The reason why Prophet Muhammad (SAW) did not hand-over the Glorious Qur’an to his companions in an arranged form and in a single written volume is that the revelation did not come in one piece but at intervals. The Qur’an was revealed gradually over a period of 23 years in different contexts and situations. As such, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) recited the verses as they were revealed to him and his companions memorized and wrote them down on different materials such as palm leaves, bones, and stones. The complete compilation of the Qur’an in a single written volume happened after the death of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), during the caliphate of Abu Bakr, the first caliph.
