(a)(i) Specimen M is the reproductive system (oviduct) of a hen, also called the female reproductive tract of a bird.

Part	Role
Funnel / infundibulum	It receives the ovum after ovulation and is the site where fertilisation takes place.
Magnum	It secretes albumen, the egg white, around the yolk and forms the chalazae.
Isthmus	It secretes materials that form the inner and outer shell membranes and helps to determine the shape of the egg.
Uterus / shell gland	It adds water and mineral salts to the egg contents and secretes calcium carbonate to form the hard eggshell.
Vagina	It receives sperm during mating and serves as a passage through which the completed egg passes.
Cloaca	It is the common chamber through which the completed egg passes before it is expelled through the vent.
