What is an effective prevention strategy that can be taught in a physical education class?

Drug abuse prevention in physical education focuses on equipping students with knowledge, attitudes, and skills that help them avoid substance misuse. Among the options, teaching the importance of developing positive coping mechanisms for stress and pressure is the most effective prevention strategy.

Many young people turn to drugs as a way of dealing with stress, peer pressure, anxiety, or emotional difficulties. When students learn healthy alternatives for managing these challenges - such as physical exercise, relaxation techniques, talking to trusted adults, pursuing hobbies, or practising mindfulness - they are less likely to resort to substance use. Physical education classes are particularly well-suited to this because they demonstrate first-hand how exercise can relieve stress and improve mood through the release of endorphins.

The remaining options are either harmful or ineffective. Encouraging secrecy about drug use prevents a person from getting help and enables continued abuse. Suggesting that drugs can be used safely in certain environments normalises drug use rather than preventing it.
