In the pole vault, the plant phase refers to the moment the pole is placed into the plant box (also called the planting box or vaulting box). The plant box is a trapezoidal metal box embedded in the ground at the base of the uprights. During the plant, the vaulter drives the far end of the pole into this box, which acts as a fulcrum. The energy from the approach run is transferred through the pole, bending it and converting the athlete's horizontal speed into vertical lift.
The plant phase is technically demanding because the vaulter must coordinate the forward drive of the pole tip into the box with the final stride and takeoff. Poor timing or angle during the plant can result in a failed vault or even injury.
