Which organelle modifies, sorts, and packages proteins for secretion or use within the cell?

The Golgi apparatus (also called the Golgi complex or Golgi body) is a membrane-bound organelle that functions as the cell's processing, packaging, and distribution centre for proteins and lipids. After proteins are synthesised by ribosomes and initially folded in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), they are transported in vesicles to the Golgi apparatus, where they undergo further modification (such as glycosylation - the addition of sugar groups), sorting, and packaging into vesicles for delivery to their final destinations. These destinations include the cell membrane (for secretion), lysosomes, or other organelles.

The other organelles serve different functions:

• The mitochondrion is the site of aerobic respiration, producing ATP (the cell's energy currency) through oxidative phosphorylation. It does not process or package proteins.
• The cytoplasm is the gel-like fluid filling the cell in which organelles are suspended. It is not an organelle itself but rather the medium in which cellular processes occur.
• The lysosome contains digestive enzymes that break down waste materials, cellular debris, and foreign substances. It receives materials packaged by the Golgi apparatus but does not perform the sorting and packaging function itself.
