In the mammalian respiratory system, exchange of gases occurs in the alveoli, which are tiny air sacs located at the end of the bronchioles in the lungs. The alveoli are surrounded by capillaries and it is here that oxygen from inhaled air diffuses across the alveolar walls and into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide from the bloodstream diffuses across the alveolar walls and into the lungs to be exhaled.
