The oxygen then diffuses into the bloodstream through the thin walls of the capillaries in the gills, while carbon dioxide diffuses out of the bloodstream and into the water. Finally, the water exits the fish's body through the operculum, which is a bony plate that covers the gills and helps to regulate water flow over them.
