(a) Composition of the General Assembly of the UNO
The General Assembly is composed of all member states of the United Nations Organisation. Each member state may send up to five representatives to the Assembly. However, irrespective of the number of representatives sent, each member state has only one vote.
(b) Functions of the General Assembly
(i) It deliberates on and makes recommendations on matters affecting international peace and security.
(ii) It discusses, approves and controls the annual budget of the UNO.
(iii) It admits new members into the UNO and may suspend or expel member states on the recommendation of the Security Council.
(iv) It elects non-permanent members of the Security Council and, together with the Security Council, appoints the Secretary-General and elects judges of the International Court of Justice.
