What is the purpose of a walking foot attachment on a sewing machine?

A walking foot (also called an even-feed foot) is a sewing machine attachment that has its own set of feed dogs on top of the fabric. These upper feed dogs work in synchronisation with the machine's lower feed dogs, gripping and advancing both the top and bottom layers of fabric at the same rate. This prevents the layers from shifting, bunching, or puckering during sewing.

The primary purpose of a walking foot is to handle thick or bulky fabrics. When sewing through multiple layers of fabric, batting, or heavy materials such as denim, leather, or quilted layers, a standard presser foot pushes down on the top layer while the lower feed dogs pull only the bottom layer. This mismatch causes the layers to shift unevenly. The walking foot solves this by feeding both layers at the same speed.

Creating decorative stitches requires specialised stitch mechanisms or decorative stitch feet, not a walking foot. Sewing stretchy fabrics is primarily managed by a stretch stitch setting or a ballpoint needle. Quilting intricate designs requires a free-motion or darning foot that allows the fabric to move freely in all directions, whereas a walking foot is used for straight-line quilting only.
