Question 1 Report

(a) State whether entropy increases or decreases during each of the following processes

(i) condensation of steam;

(ii) melting of wax;

(iii) dissolution of sugar in water;

(iv) abscas on charcoal.

(b) What deduction can be made in each case given that the value of the free energy change for a particular reaction is:

(i) zero;

ii) negative

Answer Details

(a) Entropy change

  • (i) Condensation of steam (gas → liquid): entropy decreases.
  • (ii) Melting of wax (solid → liquid): entropy increases.
  • (iii) Dissolution of sugar in water: entropy increases.
  • (iv) Adsorption of a gas on charcoal: entropy decreases (gas particles become ordered on the surface).

(b) Free energy change, ΔG

  • (i) ΔG = zero: the reaction is at equilibrium.
  • (ii) ΔG negative: the reaction is spontaneous (feasible) in the forward direction.
