Millikan's contribution to the development of atomic theory is the determination of the charge on the electron. Millikan conducted his famous oil-drop experiment to determine the charge of the electron. He used an electric field to suspend tiny oil droplets in air and measured the amount of charge needed to stop the droplets from falling or rising. Based on his experiments, Millikan determined that the charge of the electron was 1.602 x 10^-19 coulombs.
