During the Second Republic, the Great Nigerian People's Party won the governorship election in Gongola and Sokoto States. The Second Republic in Nigeria lasted from 1979 to 1983, and it was characterized by a return to civilian rule after several years of military dictatorship. During this period, the country was divided into several states, and political parties were allowed to participate in elections. The Great Nigerian People's Party (GNPP) was one of the political parties that participated in the governorship elections held in various states. In the 1979 elections, the GNPP won the governorship seats in Gongola and Sokoto States. Gongola State was created in 1976, and it comprised the present-day Adamawa and Taraba States. The GNPP candidate, Abubakar Barde, won the governorship election in the state. Sokoto State, on the other hand, was one of the states created after the division of the old North-Western State. The GNPP candidate, Shehu Kangiwa, won the governorship election in the state.
