Question 1 Report

Fig. 1 shows two binary quantities used by a drone controller. The controller adds them to calculate the combined number of image files held in a memory buffer. The box is limited to 8 bits.

Buffer 1: 11110010Buffer 2: 00101101

(a) Give the full binary result of the addition. [2]
(b) State whether an overflow occurs in the 8-bit box. [1]

Answer Details
  1. Add the binary quantities:
    \[11110010_2+00101101_2=100011111_2\]
The full result has nine bits. [2]
  2. Overflow occurs because a ninth bit is produced, so the result cannot fit in an 8-bit unsigned register. Equivalently, the total is greater than 255, the largest unsigned 8-bit value. [1]
