Question 1 Report

A hospital imaging department stores scans on a file server. Each night, the server sends an encrypted backup to a second site through a virtual private network. The backup must remain available if the main building loses power or its network connection.

(a) State what is meant by a virtual private network. [1]
(b) Give one reason why encryption is used for the backup transfer. [1]
(c) State three features of the backup plan that help protect patient scan files. [3]

Answer Details

(a) A virtual private network is an encrypted, private connection made across a public network such as the internet. [1]

(b) Encryption prevents unauthorised people reading the backup data if it is intercepted during transfer. [1]

(c) Three effective backup-plan features are:

  • store a copy at a different site, so a failure at the main building does not destroy both copies;
  • make backups regularly, so recent scan files are protected;
  • test that files can be restored, so the backup is known to be usable.

Restricting access with authentication and keeping more than one backup version are also acceptable. Any three [3].
