Question 1 Report
Read the information below about a gas cartridge for an emergency life jacket. The cartridge contains carbon dioxide under pressure. Carbon dioxide is made from carbon and oxygen. Fig. 1 compares the bonding in one carbon dioxide molecule with a section of silicon carbide, a hard abrasive material. In the silicon carbide structure, each atom is joined by covalent bonds to several neighbouring atoms.
(a) Name the type of bond in carbon dioxide. [1]
(b) Describe the structure of carbon dioxide. [1]
(c) Explain why silicon carbide is hard. [2]
(d) What type of structure is silicon carbide? [1]
(a) Carbon dioxide contains covalent bonds. [1 mark]
(b) Carbon dioxide has a simple molecular structure, made of separate small molecules. [1 mark]
(c) Silicon carbide is hard because many strong covalent bonds extend throughout its structure. A large amount of energy is needed to break these bonds. [2 marks]
(d) Silicon carbide has a giant covalent structure. [1 mark]
