Fig. 1 shows a microscope view of a transverse section through a young dicot stem and a transverse section through a grass stem. In the dicot stem, vascular bundles form a ring. In the grass stem, bundles are scattered through the tissue. Both stems contain xylem and phloem, so each can transport water, mineral ions and sugars between roots and leaves. A student uses the sections to identify a plant found on an island nature trail.
(a) Identify the tissue that carries sucrose in each stem. [1]
(b) Explain why xylem vessels are described as dead tissue. [2]
