A doctor uses the scan in Fig. 1 to discuss an early pregnancy with a patient. The developing fetus is inside a fluid-filled sac in the uterus. A cord connects the fetus to a disc-shaped placenta attached to the uterine wall. Substances pass between the mother’s blood and the fetus without their blood normally mixing directly.
