Question 1 Report
Fig. 1 shows a queen bee, a drone and two eggs in a hive. A fertilised egg develops into a female worker bee. An unfertilised egg can develop into a male drone. In both cases, cells divide many times as the embryo grows. The queen lays eggs in wax cells, and worker bees provide food and keep the brood at a suitable temperature. The colony needs both female workers and male drones at different times of year.
(a) Identify which egg in Fig. 1 develops into a drone. [1]
(b) Explain why a fertilised egg has chromosomes from two parents. [2]
(c) Identify the type of cell division that produces the queen's eggs. [1]
(d) Give one role of mitosis in the development of a worker bee. [1]
(e) Suggest why brood temperature is controlled by the workers. [1]
(a) The unfertilised egg [1] (b) A sperm nucleus fuses with an egg nucleus [1]; therefore genetic information/chromosomes come from the queen and the drone [1] (c) Meiosis [1] (d) Produces more cells for growth / formation of body tissues [1] (e) Cells and enzyme-controlled reactions need a suitable temperature for normal development [1]
