Question 1 Report
Fig. 1 shows a winter moth resting on the pale bark of a birch tree. A student placed equal numbers of pale and dark model moths on birch trunks. Birds were then allowed to feed in the area for one hour. The pale moth has markings that closely match the surface of the bark.
(a) Identify the adaptation shown by the pale moth. [1]
(b) Explain why this adaptation can increase the number of offspring produced by pale moths. [2]
(c) Give two variables the student should keep the same for a fair comparison. [2]
(a) Camouflage / cryptic colouration [1] (b) Fewer pale moths are eaten by birds [1]; more survive to reproduce and pass on alleles / have offspring [1] (c) Any two: number of each model moth [1]; time exposed [1]; size of models [1]; height on tree [1]; species / number of birds present [1]
