Question 1 Report
| Leaf treatment | Loss in mass in 30 min / g |
|---|---|
| No grease | 0.84 |
| Grease on upper surface | 0.71 |
| Grease on lower surface | 0.18 |
| Grease on both surfaces | 0.06 |
The table below shows results from an investigation into water loss from detached privet leaves. Each leaf had the same surface area and was kept for 30 minutes. One surface was covered with grease. The student used a balance to measure the loss in mass, caused mainly by water leaving the leaf.
| Leaf treatment | Loss in mass in 30 min / g |
|---|---|
| No grease | 0.84 |
| Grease on upper surface | 0.71 |
| Grease on lower surface | 0.18 |
| Grease on both surfaces | 0.06 |
(a) Record the loss in mass for the leaf with grease on both surfaces. [1]
(b) Calculate the rate of mass loss, in g per minute, for the untreated leaf. [2]
(c) Explain what the results suggest about the distribution of stomata on privet leaves. [1]
(a) 0.06 g [1] (b) 0.84 / 30 [1]; 0.028 g per minute [1] (c) Most stomata are on the lower surface / more water is lost from the lower surface [1]
