Question 1 Report
Fig. 1 shows a blood smear viewed through a microscope in a hospital laboratory. Most cells in the field of view are red blood cells. One larger white blood cell is also shown. The patient has a bacterial infection, and the doctor expects the number of white blood cells to rise. Red blood cells are specialised for transporting oxygen. They have no nucleus when mature and contain haemoglobin. The laboratory scientist counts different blood cells before deciding whether another test is needed.
(a) Identify the cell labelled D. [1]
(b) Identify the cell labelled E. [1]
(c) Explain how the structure of cell D helps it transport oxygen. [2]
(d) Give one role of cell E in defending the body against disease. [1]
(a) D is a red blood cell. [1]
(b) E is a white blood cell. [1]
(c) It contains haemoglobin, which binds oxygen. [1] It has no nucleus / biconcave shape, leaving more space or increasing surface area for oxygen transport. [1]
(d) Engulfs pathogens / produces antibodies. [1]
