Fig. 1 shows a beekeeper marking queens from two hives. One hive has survived a parasite that killed many bees in nearby colonies. The beekeeper plans to breed queens from this hive with drones from another healthy hive. Bee offspring develop from eggs, and traits can be passed through reproductive cells. The beekeeper does not claim that every young bee will resist the parasite, because resistance may depend on several genes and conditions in the hive.
