This diagram is a cross-section through a splinter in the skin of a gardener. Bacteria have entered the body through the broken surface. White blood cells move from a nearby capillary into the damaged tissue. One cell is shown surrounding a bacterium. This is part of the non-specific defence response and happens before the body makes a large number of antibodies. The gardener cleans the wound to lower the number of bacteria entering the blood.
