Question 1 Report

The diagram in Fig. 1 shows an electric kettle used in a campsite kitchen. Water surrounds the heating element in the base. The kettle is connected to a 230 V supply and the current in the element is 8.0 A. The camper places a lid on the kettle before heating the water. As the water near the element becomes hotter, water circulates through the kettle. The camper uses the kettle to make a hot drink and wants to calculate the resistance of the element.

(a) Calculate the resistance of the heating element. [2]
(b) What type of energy transfer occurs in the heating element? [2]

Answer Details
  1. (a) \[R=\frac{V}{I}\] [1]
    \[R=\frac{230}{8.0}=28.75\ \Omega\approx29\ \Omega\]
    The resistance is 29 Ω [2].
  2. (b) Electrical energy is transferred to thermal energy [2] in the heating element.
