Question 1 Report

The diagram in Fig. 1 shows an infrared heater drying paint on a bicycle frame. The heater is placed a short distance from the metal frame and does not touch it. A black card and a shiny metal card are attached to different parts of the frame. The black card becomes hotter in the same time. The worker uses a timer and temperature probes, and puts a safety screen around the heater. This investigation compares how surfaces absorb thermal radiation.

(a) What type of radiation transfers energy from the heater? [2]
(b) Which card is the better absorber of this radiation? [2]
(c) What happens to the particles in the black card as its temperature rises? [2]

Answer Details
  1. (a) The heater transfers energy by infrared radiation [2]. Radiation can travel through the gap between heater and frame, so no contact is needed.
  2. (b) The black or dull card [2] is the better absorber. Its greater temperature rise in the same time is evidence that it absorbed more infrared radiation.
  3. (c) Particles in the black card gain kinetic energy [1] and vibrate or move faster [1] as its temperature rises.
