The arrest of Jesus by his enemies was a fulfillment of the scriptures. According to the Bible, Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, who identified him to the Jewish authorities with a kiss. The Jewish leaders, who were threatened by Jesus' teachings and popularity, arrested him and brought him before the Roman authorities, who ultimately sentenced him to death by crucifixion. This event was seen by Christians as the fulfillment of numerous prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures, which had foretold the coming of a suffering servant who would redeem God's people.
