List three phenomena which can be explained by the molecular theory of matter.

Answer Details

Phenomena explained by the molecular (kinetic) theory of matter

  • Diffusion - the spreading of one substance through another, due to the random motion of molecules.
  • Brownian motion - the ceaseless, random, zig-zag movement of tiny particles (such as smoke or pollen grains) caused by bombardment by fast-moving air or liquid molecules.
  • Evaporation - the escape of the more energetic molecules from a liquid surface, accompanied by cooling of the liquid left behind.

(Surface tension, capillarity, expansion on heating and osmosis are also acceptable.)
