This is because on this day, the tilt of the Earth's axis is such that the North Pole is tilted away from the sun, leading to more hours of darkness in the northern hemisphere and less hours of daylight. This means that the northern hemisphere experiences either longer nights and shorter days, or longer days and shorter nights, but not equal amounts of both.
