A FRIENDSHIP ALMOST LOST
Chidera and I had been inseparable friends since our first year in secondary school. We shared everything, our lunch, our books, our secrets and our dreams. People called us twins, for wherever one was, the other was never far behind. Yet even the strongest friendship, I would soon learn, can be shattered by a single careless word.
It happened during the preparations for our school's inter-house sports. Both of us were chosen to run in the four-hundred-metre race for the Green House, and a fierce, secret rivalry began to grow between us. On the day of the heat, Chidera edged me at the finishing line by a whisker. Instead of congratulating him, I accused him, in the hearing of others, of tripping me deliberately. Stung by the false charge, he called me a jealous liar. Hot words flew between us, and by the time our friends dragged us apart, our long friendship lay in ruins.
For weeks we did not speak. We sat far apart in class, looked away when we passed each other, and pretended not to care. But deep inside, I was miserable. I missed his laughter, his advice, and the warmth of his company. I could see, too, that he was just as unhappy, though pride would not let either of us take the first step.
The wall between us finally crumbled on the day I fell seriously ill in class. As I slumped over my desk, burning with fever, it was Chidera who rushed to my side, lifted me up, and half-carried me all the way to the sick bay. He stayed by my bed until my parents arrived, holding my hand and whispering that everything would be fine.
When I recovered and returned to school, I sought him out at once. Words tumbled out of both of us together, each begging the other's forgiveness for the foolish quarrel. I admitted that my accusation had been born of jealousy, and he confessed that his harsh reply had been unfair. We apologised to each other and reconciled.
