Question 1 Report

Study the map on a scale of 1:50,000 and answer the following questions

(a) In your answer book, draw an outline of the map to the scale of 1:150,000 and insert:
(i) the full length of River Oshin
(ii) a named watershed northeast of River Oshin
(iii) the settlement of Marafa
(iv) the ridge east of the main road.

(b) Calculate the distance in kilometres along the main road from Onikoko to Alade (show all workings clearly).

(c) (i) State with a reason, one likely occupation of the inhabitants of the area on the map
(ii) If your class were to go on an excursion along the mein road from Woru to the south western edge of the map, state three physical and two human features you are likely to see along the road.

Answer Details

(a) Reduced outline map, scale 1:150,000

The reduction factor is:

\[\frac{1:150,000}{1:50,000}=3\]

Thus, every length on the original map is reduced to one-third. The outline measures 12.2 cm by 12.2 cm.

figure
Reduced outline map at a scale of 1:150,000, showing the required features.

Key features inserted:

  1. the full length of River Oshin;
  2. Igporin Hill, the named watershed north-east of River Oshin;
  3. Marafa settlement; and
  4. the ridge east of the main road.

(b) Distance along the main road from Onikoko to Alade

Distance measured along the road on the map = \(16.0\text{ cm}\).

Scale \(=1:50,000\).

\[1\text{ cm}=50,000\text{ cm}=\frac{50,000}{100,000}\text{ km}=0.5\text{ km}\]

\[\text{Ground distance}=16.0\times0.5=8.0\text{ km}\]

Distance from Onikoko to Alade = \(8\text{ km}\).

(c)(i) Likely occupation

Farming is a likely occupation because areas of scattered cultivation are shown on the map.

(c)(ii) Features likely to be seen along the main road from Woru to the south-western edge of the map

Physical features:

  1. Rivers or streams.
  2. Ridge or isolated hills.
  3. Light forest, scrub or orchard bush.

Human features:

  1. Settlements, including built-up areas and isolated compounds.
  2. Roads, bridges, footpaths and areas of scattered cultivation.
