Answer Details
The West African Youth League (WAYL) was a nationalist movement founded by ITA Wallace-Johnson in 1935. It was a political and social organization that aimed to promote African self-rule and to challenge colonialism in West Africa. ITA Wallace-Johnson, who was a Sierra Leonean politician and trade unionist, was the driving force behind the WAYL. He believed that Africans should be free to govern themselves and that the colonial powers had no right to control their lives and resources. The WAYL became popular among young people in West Africa and helped to inspire other nationalist movements across the region. It played a key role in advocating for independence and in raising awareness about the injustices of colonial rule. While the movement faced opposition from colonial authorities and was eventually banned, its legacy lived on and helped to pave the way for the decolonization of West Africa.
