Question 1 Report

Name the three basic components P, Q and R that make up a cathode ray tube, as illustrated in the diagram above

Answer Details

The diagram is a cathode-ray tube (CRT), and the three labelled sections are its three basic components:

  • P - the electron gun: the assembly at the narrow end containing the heated filament/cathode and the anodes (focusing and accelerating electrodes). It produces, focuses and accelerates a narrow beam of electrons.
  • Q - the deflecting system (deflecting plates): the pairs of parallel plates (the X- and Y-plates) through which the beam passes. They deflect the electron beam horizontally and vertically by means of the electric fields between the plates.
  • R - the fluorescent screen: the flared front face of the tube, coated on the inside with a fluorescent (phosphor) material. It glows to produce a visible spot where the electron beam strikes it.
