Answer Details

(a) Locations on the outline map of Nigeria

(i) Highlands:

  • North-Central (Jos) Highlands around Jos in the centre-north.
  • Western Highlands (Yoruba/Western uplands) in the south-west.
  • Adamawa Highlands in the east/north-east on the Cameroon border (Gongola/Adamawa area).
  • Udi Hills (Udi Plateau) in the south-east near Enugu.

(ii) Rivers: Sokoto (north-west), Gongola (north-east, draining into the Benue), Oshun (south-west) and Anambra (south-east, draining into the Niger).

(b) Four ways the North-Central (Jos) Highlands are of economic importance

  1. Mining: the plateau is Nigeria's chief source of tin and columbite, providing minerals for export and revenue.
  2. Agriculture: the cool climate favours temperate crops and market gardening (Irish potatoes, vegetables, fruits) and cattle rearing on the grasslands.
  3. Hydro-electric power and water supply: the high land and rivers provide sites for dams and are a source of many rivers.
  4. Tourism and health resort: the cool, pleasant climate and scenery (e.g. Jos and the Assop Falls) attract tourists and make it a health resort; it also supports forestry.

(c) Four problems limiting the economic development of the region

  1. Rugged and steep terrain which hinders the construction of roads, railways and buildings.
  2. Derelict land and erosion caused by past tin mining, leaving pits and infertile spoil heaps.
  3. Thin, poor soils in parts, and shortage of good farmland.
  4. Isolation and inadequate infrastructure, together with communal conflicts, which discourage investment.
