Answer Details

(a) Two factors that affect the rate of diffusion:

  • Temperature (higher temperature gives faster diffusion).
  • The mass/size of the diffusing molecules (lighter molecules diffuse faster). The concentration gradient is also acceptable.

(b) Two examples illustrating the effects of surface tension:

  • Small liquid drops (e.g. water or mercury) take up a spherical shape.
  • A dry steel needle or a small insect can rest on the surface of water without sinking. (Capillary rise of liquid in a narrow tube is also acceptable.)
