An object at rest is said to possess potential energy.
Potential energy is stored energy that an object has because of its position or arrangement. For example, an object placed on a high shelf has potential energy due to its position above the ground. If the object were to fall, the potential energy would be converted into kinetic energy, which is the energy of motion.
Chemical energy, electrical energy, and other forms of energy can also be converted into potential energy and kinetic energy depending on the situation.
