What happened to Lot's wife?

The fate of Lot's wife is recorded in Genesis 19:15-26. When God determined to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their wickedness, two angels came to rescue Lot and his family. The angels urged them to flee and gave a clear instruction: "Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the plain" (Genesis 19:17).

As they fled the city, Lot's wife disobeyed the command and looked back toward Sodom. She was immediately turned into a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26). This transformation served as a dramatic consequence of disobedience and has become one of the most memorable images in the Old Testament.

She did not drown, was not swallowed by the earth, and did not die in Sodom. The destruction of Sodom involved fire and brimstone raining from heaven, but Lot's wife had already left the city when she looked back. Her specific punishment was being turned into a pillar of salt.
