What was Zechariah's punishment for doubting Gabriel's message?

The account of Zechariah and the angel Gabriel is recorded in Luke 1:5-25. Zechariah was an elderly priest married to Elizabeth. While he was serving in the temple, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and announced that Elizabeth would bear a son, to be named John (later known as John the Baptist).

Zechariah doubted the message, asking: "How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years" (Luke 1:18). In response, Gabriel declared that because Zechariah had not believed his words, he would be unable to speak until the day the child was born. Zechariah was struck mute immediately and remained so until after the birth of John, when he confirmed the child's name and his speech was restored (Luke 1:63-64).

The punishment was muteness, not blindness, deafness, or leprosy. Blindness was the affliction that struck Paul (then Saul) on the road to Damascus. Leprosy features in other biblical narratives (such as Naaman or Miriam) but is not connected to Zechariah.
