What was the punishment of Ananias and Sapphira for lying to the Holy Spirit?

The punishment of Ananias and Sapphira for lying to the Holy Spirit was death. This event is recorded in Acts 5:1-11. Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold a piece of property but secretly kept back part of the proceeds while claiming to have given the full amount to the apostles.

When Ananias brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet, Peter confronted him: "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?" (Acts 5:3). Peter made clear that before selling, the property belonged to Ananias, and after selling, the money was his to do with as he wished. The sin was not in keeping some money but in lying about it, pretending to give the full amount. Upon hearing Peter's words, Ananias fell down and died. About three hours later, Sapphira arrived, repeated the same lie, and also fell dead.

This severe judgment served as a powerful warning to the early Church about the seriousness of dishonesty before God. Acts 5:11 records that "great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events." The other punishments listed (imprisonment, excommunication, blindness) were not applied in this case.
