What did Jesus ride into Jerusalem?

Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem, an event known as the Triumphal Entry, recorded in all four Gospels (Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-40, John 12:12-19). Jesus instructed two disciples to go to a nearby village where they would find a donkey tied with her colt. They brought the animals to Jesus, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on the colt and rode into Jerusalem.

This deliberate choice fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9: "Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." As Jesus entered the city, crowds spread their cloaks and palm branches on the road, shouting "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"

The donkey was significant because it was an animal of peace, in contrast to a horse, which symbolised war and military conquest. By riding a donkey, Jesus presented Himself as a humble, peaceful king rather than a conquering warrior. A chariot or horse would have conveyed military power. A camel, while used for travel in the ancient Near East, has no connection to this event or the messianic prophecy.
